A dedicated advocate, Joseph P. Garin is a partner in the firm of Lipson, Neilson, Cole, Seltzer & Garin, P.C. He maintains a national practice, focusing on defense of professional liability claims, insurance coverage disputes, directors and officers claims, and risk management. Throughout his career, Mr. Garin has defended more than 400 lawyers and law firms across Michigan, Illinois, Nevada and Colorado. He is also experienced in complex and commercial litigation matters, including cases involving breach of contract and unfair business practices. He has successfully pursued and resisted claims for extraordinary relief, such as temporary restraining orders and preliminary and permanent injunctions. He specializes in a range of litigation matters, including professional liability disputes, insurance coverage, director and officer liability, commercial law and employer/employee disputes. He regularly consults with insurers and businesses of all sizes to manage their risks and reduce litigation expenses.
Mr. Garin is former Chair and current member of the Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility to the Nevada State Bar. He also serves as Co-Chair on the Professional Liability Committee of The Claims and Litigation Management (CLM) Alliance. He is frequently consulted as an expert witness. He has served as a court-appointed special master and settlement facilitator. He is an SCAO-trained Mediator. He has been a featured speaker at continuing education conferences on a national and state level. He teaches continuing legal education seminars locally and nationally in cooperation with various local bar associations. Mr. Garin serves on the Board of Directors of ENSURE Children’s Hospital of Michigan and the Advisory Board of Think Detroit.

May 4, 2016 – Featured speaker at the Project REAL 10th Anniversary Celebration. This event was held on the Garden Terrace at the Molasky Corporate Center, 100 N. City Parkway in Downtown Las Vegas. Project REAL, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, was created in 2005 to meet the challenge of teaching K-12th grade Nevada students the importance of the law. Its goal is to prepare Nevada’s children to become involved, participating citizens who understand their social responsibilities and rights.
April 6, 2016 – Featured speaker on “Law Firm Dissolutions, Receivers, Bankruptcy and Claims” at the Claims & Litigation Management Alliance (CLM) Annual Conference, held at the Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek.
November 19, 2015 – State Bar of Nevada “Ethics Year in Review”. This seminar provided attendees with three Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits. Garin discussed the ethical concerns pertaining to some very relevant topics in today’s legal industry including: lawyer blogs and advertising, medical marijuana, representation for individual v. organization, data privacy laws, working with third-party vendors, changing firms and law firm dissolution.
November 5, 2105 – Annual Claims & Litigation Management Conference in Atlanta, GA. Panelist discussing Current Issues in the Wireless World. This panel will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the “Wireless World”, including the potential pitfalls such as the wording of your biography or resume posted in social media, or the risk of violating professional responsibility rules and having to make a claim to your Professional Liability Insurance carrier. Alternatively, the panel will discuss advantages of the “Wireless World” including the use of social media in litigation management and trial. This conference will be attended by insurance industry executives and attorneys from across the United States.
June 16, 2015 – Errors & Omissions Claims Trends Panelist at the Errors & Omissions Insurance ExecuSummit in Uncasville, CT. This conference brings together legal and insurance industry professionals from across the country to discuss emerging issues in this very specialized area of insurance, and law.
